The 2011 Mille e Una Notte is based on Nero d’Avola, although the wine sees smaller percentages of other grapes in supporting roles. This is a thick and darkly saturated expression with a bold flavor profile that reveals dark fruit, jammy blackberry, exotic spice and moist chewing tobacco. The 2011 vintage falls under the IGT Sicilia appellation (but newer vintages will be labeled under the Contessa Entellina appellation). The intensity of the bouquet is remarkable as is the thickness and weight of the wine’s texture. Mille e Una Notte is an all-Sicilian wine with an interesting Bordeaux slant. The tannins are firm but very well integrated.

Purple-ruby. Captivating floral aromas of plum, black currant, star anise, cocoa and cinnamon; this is a great deal more floral and perfumed than the 2010. Smooth, lush and round; a fresh, juicy quality contributes to the impression of early personality and precise flavors of dark berries and cocoa. Offers a delightful combination of texture and focus. Finishes broad and long, displaying ripe, very polished tannins and repeating violet nuances. This is one of the best young Mille e Una Notte wines I have memory of. A blend of mainly Nero d’Avola with small additions of Syrah and Petit Verdot. Drinking window: 2019 – 2029. (Ian d’Agata)

Donnafugata has long been one the greatest examples of the wine renaissance that transformed Sicilian wine more than two decades ago. Its flagship wine is Mille e una Notte, an eclectic blend that marries Sicily’s most celebrated red grape, Nero d’Avola with several international grape varieties, notably Petit Verdot and Syrah. The 2011 is a stunning wine, massively structured and showing nuances of red and black fruits with an overlay of wood spice. Serve it now or cellar over the next 10 to 15 years.
