Full golden-tinged straw color. Spicy aromas of yellow plum, grapefruit, honey, ginger, and jasmine. Bright and juicy, with bright acids really providing the musky tropical fruit, floral and spice flavors outstanding clarity and cut. The floral and ginger elements linger long on the clean, suave aftertaste. This Kabir is one of the best in memory; I find it’s almost always Donnafugata’s most underrated wine. Ian D’Agata

Bright yellow-gold color. Pungent, tangy aromas of orange peel, grapefruit, lime blossom, apricot and sweet spices on the mesmerizingly pure nose. Juicy, intense and penetrating, with razor-sharp acidity lifting and focusing the thick, concentrated grapefruit, honeyed peach, orange peel, cinnamon and ginger flavors. This shows a near-perfect sugar/acid balance, and comes across as light on its feet for such a rich, concentrated wine. The slowly building, palate-staining finish goes on and on, with repeating floral and honey notes. This is always Donnafugata’s best wine, and this vintage is one of their best ever. Readers should be aware that moscato di Alessandria is usually called zibibbo in Italy (which is also its official name, by the way). Ian D’Agata

“Dark violet-red. Spicy raspberry, cassis, plum and floral aromas display very good vibrancy and precision. In the mouth, firmer red cherry and redcurrant flavors are subtly accented by dried herbs and baking spices, with lively acidity enhancing the bright, juicy mouthfeel. A vibrant, fragrant red that is as close to a sure bet as there is in Italian wine today and always one of Italy’s best wine buys. It deserves 90 points on its yummy factor alone, but this vintage has a little less complexity and depth than usual for me.” Ian d’Agata

“Straw-gold. Stone fruits, fresh herbs and a hint of licorice on the nose. Juicy, minty and fresh in the mouth, with flavors of underripe apricot, Golden Delicious apple and minerals. Finishes lean and bright, with lemon and delicate herbal notes lingering nicely. A straightforward wine that will go marvelously well with shellfish, this is a simple, extremely well made and satisfying bottle for the money.” – Ian d’Agata

“Bright medium yellow-gold. Pungent muscaty aromas of pink grapefruit, orange blossom, rose petal and minty cinnamon, lifted by jasmine. In the mouth, the fruit-driven flavors of green papaya and grapefruit are a little less intense than some past vintages of this wine. Finishes smooth and round, with a lingering lavender nuance. For the money, this is always one of Italy’s top dry aromatic whites, and usually a 90-pointer. This ’09 misses out on an outstanding score only because it could use a little more verve and crispness, but I’m probably splitting hairs.” – Ian d’Agata

“Vivid amber-tinged golden- yellow. Piercingly intense aromas of dried apricot, candied peach, rose petal and grapefruit are complicated by hints of raisin and date on the captivating nose. Then juicy and fresh in the mouth, with concentrated flavors of ripe citrus, sweet spices and white flowers. This has huge fruit but doesn’t come across as heavy or cloying thanks to wonderfully harmonious acids. An essence of air-dried muscat of Alexandria. I would have scored this pure, mesmerizingly intense wine even higher but for some oaky dryness that emerged as the wine opened in the glass. By far the best wine made at Donnafugata. (Folio Fine Wine Partners, Napa, CA).” Ian d’Agata

Saturated ruby. Very dark aromas of black fruits, violet, graphite and bitter chocolate, plus sexy vanillin oak. Large-scaled and thick but suave, boasting outstanding depth and precision to its black fruit, cedar and herb flavors. Finishes with mouthcoating tannins and outrageous sweetness and size, but manages to maintain impressive verve. The best Mille e Una Notte in years, and one that reminds me of nero d’Avola, not cabernet sauvignon. Extremely well done.

($15; a 50/50 blend of ansonica and cataratto) Straw-yellow with a hint of gold. Delightful nose is redolent of tangerine and bright floral aromas. Similarly bright and fresh in the mouth, with a salty touch to the ripe citrus and apricot flavors. Finishes clean and subtly saline, with a bit more residual sugar than the very good 2006 vintage.” Ian D’Agata

“($40) Golden yellow with a bright orange tinge. Explosive, highly perfumed aromas of ripe apricot, peach, citrus fruits, cinnamon and pepper. Pure and clean, with impressive depth to the ripe citrus and peach flavors; an undercurrent of tropical fruits contributes volume and flesh. The concentrated, very long finish throws off notes of lavender and acacia honey. Perhaps the best-ever Ben Rye, amazingly intense yet elegant and impeccably balanced.. Depending on the vintage, it’s made up of grapes from 3 to 11 vineyards located in different sub-zones on the island of Pantelleria, one of my favorite wine spots and a uniquely beautiful region.” Ian D’Agata

“($15; 100% nero d’Avola) Dark red. Spiced plum, red cherry and baking spices on the nose, perked up by a light dusting of cracked pepper. Sappy, fruit-driven flavors of black cherry and raspberry, with complicating floral nuances and a long, nutty finish. Made in a lightweight style, this really blossoms in the glass, picking up flesh and volume. For maximum enjoyment, serve this lightly chilled on a hot summer day.” Ian D’Agata
