The 2012 Sedara is an entry-level blend of mostly Nero d’Avola with Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a few other red grapes thrown in. There’s a touch of animal fur, Band Aid or old leather but the wine is primarily focused on aromas of plush red fruit and simple blackberry. The mouthfeel is moderate in length, but the wine packs a powerful punch as it lasts on the palate, thanks to the general opulence and weight inherent within. Those animal aromas may worsen with time so this value wine is best served up quickly. Drink 2014-2015.

A Sicilian oenological masterpiece, the 2011 Passito di Pantelleria Ben Rye bursts from the glass with amazing intensity and vitality. If you have even visited the rustic island of Pantelleria, those aromas of candied fruit, jasmine, almond blossom, dried sage and marine salt will prove hauntingly familiar. This is one of Italy’s most distinctive wines and it is infinitely married to a sense of place. Honey, roasted chestnuts and marzipan appear on the long creamy close. Zibibbo has a good amount of natural acidity and ultimately that’s what sets this delicious dessert wine apart. It feels opulent and luscious, but that crisp vein of zest keeps the palate refreshed. Drink 2014-2025.

The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d’Avola, Tannat and other mixed varieties all aged up to 14 months in French oak. There’s a modern touch of dark chocolate followed by bold fruit intensity, blackberry preserves and sweet spice. Tancredi is built for immediate consumption, but the tannins in the 2009 are still a bit young and firm, so I suggest holding off from drinking it for one more year. Drink 2015-2023.

The 2008 Contessa Entellina Rosso Mille e una Notte stands out immediately in a blind tasting, thanks to the wine’s instantly recognizable pedigree. Crafted in a seamless manner, this mostly Nero d’Avola based wine is inky dark and beautifully concentrated with thick layers of blackberry, barbecue spice and a defining note of eucalyptus oil (that seems stronger in this vintage). This is a soft and penetrating effort with long, polished tannins, impressive richness and persistency. Donnafugata doesn’t reveal what other grapes may be present in the blend, but given the strong Bordeaux influences at the winery, there could be grapes associated with that part of France. In the style of the great super Tuscan wines, Mille e una Notte is a true “super Sicilian.” Drink 2015-2025.
