Ben Ryé is a wine not to be missed at Vinitaly

Donnafugata’s Passito di Pantelleria is one of the most popular wines at Verona’s exhibition; it represents an icon of Italian wines all over the world, for the critics and public alike.

Trade operators, journalists and wine lovers carefully plan their visit to Verona to ensure they do not miss important events and tastings; one of the tastings on almost everybody’s list is that of Ben Ryé, an experience not to be missed at Vinitaly.

It starts with Opera Wine on Saturday 9th April at Palazzo della Gran Guardia, where you will find a 2010 Ben Ryé alongside the best Italian wines selected by Wine Spectator.

The gates of Verona’s exhibition centre will open for the 50th edition of Vinitaly on 10th April. This important milestone will be marked by the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. From the day it opens, Ben Ryé is sure to be in great demand, as it has been for many years now, with more than 100 bottles opened every day, a true record for a sweet wine.

This wine is an outstanding example of Italian excellence and at Donnafugata’s booth (Hall 2) you will find a further four vintages: 2005, 2008 limited edition, 2013 and 2014. This is the Sicilian wine estate’s way of rewarding operators and enthusiasts, for whom Ben Ryé is a wine that touches the heart and responds to the desire for an exclusive, unique and memorable taste experience.

A success that even finds the critics in agreement: “a knock-out wine”according to Monica Larner from The Wine Advocate, who recently wrote about the longevity of Ben Ryé after experiencing a vertical tasting of 22 vintages; “a wine that manages the neat trick of being superconcentrated but also light on its feet” wrote Ian d’Agata for Vinous; “sun and apricots”was the comment made by Luca Gardini, who placed it in his top 50 wines of the world. A few years ago, Wine Enthusiast also listed it in its top 100 and there have been other mentions and acknowledgements on the websites of Jancis Robinson and James Suckling, which all considered place Ben Ryé as one of the best sweet wines in the world, up there with the best French Sauternes, Hungarian Tokajis and Ice wines.

“On Pantelleria – claims Antonio Rallo, the winemaker of this family-run business – we work 68 hectares of vineyards spread over 14 different districts; vines are grown on terraces using Pantelleria’s typical bush-trained vine system, recently declared a Unesco world heritage; the Ben Ryè passito is a symbol of heroic viticulture and a production process involving highly skilled craftsmanship: fresh grapes dried naturally on mats, manual destemming of the dried grapes and vinification performed to the highest standard. Ben Ryé is the result of a tailored approach that brings to the glass a true expression of the land of its origin and is capable of winning over and pleasing anybody who tastes it. We are proud of this wine, which has rewarded us for our labour.”
