Contrada Marchesa from the slopes of Etna
Where volcanic and Mediterranean wines arises
Our vineyards are located on the northern slope of Etna, between 730 and 750 meters a.s.l., an area characterized by little rainfall and cool and breezy summers, which help to produce healthy grapes. The soils are sandy, and of volcanic origin: in Contrada Marchesa the lava flows have solidified like an amphitheater around the vineyards of Nerello Mascalese, which accentuate the air temperature variations between day and night.
The “sciara” of Contrada Marchesa
Footprints of history imprinted on the wines
With its eruptions, Etna produces “sciare”, lava flows which, through long physico-chemical processes, give life to fertile and cultivable soils. Each sciara gives specific characteristics to the soil, making the wines from this micro-territory unique. The two crus Fragore Contrada Montelaguardia and Contrada Marchesa Etna Rosso DOC come from old vines that have their roots in very ancient lava flows.
The elegant cru, an icon of Etna
A great balance between freshness and structure
Contrada Marchesa comes from the vineyards cultivated via the Etna alberello and partly via the espalier system. Here the temperatures are colder and the ripening later. Following the careful manual harvest of the grapes, a further selection of the bunches and grapes is carried out on the vibrating table. Fermentation is in steel with maceration on the skins for 10-12 days at a temperature of 25°C (77°F). Ageing is for 14 months in French oak and then for at least 12 months in bottles.

The protagonist of this label, designed by the illustrator Stefano Vitale, is brimming with charm and mystery. A volcano-goddess with an aristocratic face, adorned with precious jewels: flowers and fruits that reflect the prestige of this select area. The label also depicts the medieval village of Castiglione di Sicilia and its vineyards interspersed with volcanic ashes.
